The plant was honored with the Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society and is an invaluable perennial for the late season garden. The tuberous upright plants have thicker, sturdier stems than other monkshoods and therefore are less likely to need support. The palmate dark green foliage is leathery and deeply divided into 3-5 lobes. Beginning in late summer and persisting well into autumn, unique, two-petalled azure blue flowers are packed tightly in terminal racemes held 3-4 feet in the air. Uses/Culture: Mid-sized planting for beds and borders, specimen plant, woodland margins, stream or pond side planting. Plants prefer full sun and a rich, consistently moist, but well-draining soil; some afternoon shade is recommended for zones 6 and above.
