Black currants are self-fertile shrubs with a compact habit and rarely exceed 4 feet in height at maturity. Small greenish flowers appear in spring, but are not particularly ornamental. Blooms are replaced by pendulous clusters of round fruits which ripen June to July. The tasty fruits are high in vitamin C. Leaves are medium green with 3-5 lobes and fragrant when crushed. Plants begin fruit production in the second or third growing season when grown from seed. Uses/Culture: Fruit or vegetable gardens, grouped in shrub borders. Plant in full sun in northern climates ad partial shade in regions with hot summers. Performs best in moderate to fertile, evenly moist, but well-draining soil; adapts well to a variety of soil conditions, but avoid heavy clay soils. Avoid over-watering. Choose a location with protection from strong winter winds and frost pockets. Germination requirements: Germination occurs under warm (65-75F), moist, humid conditions following a 3-4 month period of cold stratification. Fall sow direct (in mild climates), to a cold frame or unheated greenhouse for germination in the spring. In northern climates, grow on in a cold frame for planting out in the second season of growth.
