Common Name(s): Creeping blue speedwell Botanical Name: Veronica repens Type: Perennial Hardiness: Zones 2 to 9 Light Requirements: Water Requirements: Moderate to dry Bloom Colors: Lilac to blue Bloom Period: Late spring to early summer Height: 2 to 3 inches Spacing: 8 to 12 inches Description: A compact plant with immense charm best suited for rockeries and other well-draining areas. Plants produce small, fleshy, dark green leaves with glossy surfaces on prostrate stems. Matt forming plants spread slowly to cover an area 3 or more feet wide and can withstand light foot traffic making them a good choice for use as a ground cover. Clusters of lilac blue flowers are held on short stems above the foliage. At peak, blooms can cover the foliage completely. Uses/Culture: Excellent accent plant for container gardens, ground cover, rock and alpine gardens, edging for sunny beds and borders. Plants perform best in full sun but will tolerate some shade. Add sand or grit to improve drainage if necessary; plants do not tolerate wet feet. Tolerant of periods of drought once established. Germination Requirements: Seeds are very small and best sown indoors 4-6 weeks prior to planting time. Stored seeds may require a 3-4 week period of cold stratification to induce germination.
