The four-petaled flowers usually last only a day but are produced in large clusters which open continuously over the course of many weeks; as blooms fade, the petals change to red. The opposite, green leaves are lanceolate, toothed and provide a nice backdrop for the sunset hues. Plants are both heat and drought tolerant once established and bloom best in poor to average soils. Uses: Front of mixed beds and borders, wildlife and cottage gardens. Plant in full sun and average to poor, well-drained soil for best performance; heat and drought tolerant once established. Apply a layer of straw mulch in late fall for overwintering north of zone 6. Germination Requirements: Germination occurs in 1-3 weeks under warm, moist conditions. Sow direct to the garden after danger of frost has passed or indoors, 4-6 weeks prior to last spring frost date for earliest blooms.
