Common Name(s): Globe Thistle Botanical Name: Echinops ritro Cultivar: White Globe Type: Herbaceous Perennial Hardiness: Zones 3 to 7 Light Requirements: Full sun to partial shade Water Requirements: Average Bloom Color(s): White/silver Bloom Period: Early summer to fall Height: 24 to 48 inches (in flower) Spacing: 24 inches Features: Showy blooms, first year flowering Precautions: Plants have sharp spines; use caution when handling. Description: Globe thistle is a unique plant with excellent textural value for the border bearing 6-8 inch long gray-green leaves with deeply cut wavy margins with smooth tops and silvery, hairy undersides. The upright branching stems are topped by 2-3 inch diameter silvery-white globe-shaped heads of prickly bracts in early summer, though this does not make them particularly gardener friendly, they are highly enamored by butterflies and bees alike and a visual delight in the garden. Flowers first year from seed when started early. These low maintenance plants are resilient and perform well in difficult areas. Echinops is not prone to any problems with pest or disease. Flowers are excellent for use in dried and fresh arrangements. Uses/Culture: Specimen or accent for beds and borders, cutting and wildlife gardens, xeri-scaping. Performs best average to lean soils with full sun and adequate drainage, but will tolerate some shade; drought tolerant once established. Germination Requirements: Germination occurs in 1-3 weeks under warm, moist conditions. Sow direct to the garden after danger of frost has passed in spring or 6-8 weeks prior to last expected frost date for first season blooms
