Common Name(s): Grass of Parnassus, Bog stars Botanical Name: Parnassia glauca Type: Perennial Hardiness: Zones 5 to 9 Light: Full sun to partial shade Water: Moist to boggy Bloom Color(s): White Bloom Period: Mid-summer to fall Height: 12 to 18 inches Spacing: 18 inches Description: This native North American wildflower is home to diminishing wetlands of the Northeastern US and Canada and is among the endangered and threatened species of concern in several NE states. As such it should not be collected from the wild. Compact plants form loose rosettes of basal leaves which spread by underground rhizome. Leathery, entire leaves are nearly round, shiny and light to medium green. 12 inch long arching stems hold solitary upward facing white blooms with uniquely translucent veins from July to October followed by bulging, green, faintly-striped seed capsules. Uses: Water gardens and other moist areas such as bog gardens, stream or pond edges, sunny woodland borders. Plants perform best in full sun to partial shade and require consistently moist, preferably limey soil for success. Skill Level: Experienced, germination is slow, fall sow or subject seed to a 3-month period of stratification to induce germination.
