Common Name(s): Hens and Chicks, Houseleeks Botanical Name: Sempervivum hybridum Cultivar: Winter Hardy Mix Type: Evergreen perennial Hardiness: USDA zones 3 to 8 Light Requirements: Full sun Water Requirements: Low Bloom Colors: Red, pink, yellow, cream, white Bloom Period: Summer to fall Height: 6 to 8 inches Spacing: 12 inches Features: Showy blooms, attractive foliage, drought tolerant Precautions: None known Seeds per packet: About 40 Description: Plants are evergreen in all areas and durable as the botanical name suggests (semper-always, vivo-live). Sempervivum have thick, fleshy leaves that form rosettes and are often tinged in shades of purple or red. Each rosette grows 3-4 inches wide, consisting of as many as 60 leaves. The unique blooms are generally red and born atop thick fleshy stems, but may also occur in white, green, purple, pink, yellow or cream. The one inch diameter flowers are comprised of twelve parts. Young plants form around the base of older plants, and after flowering the "hens" often die leaving the "chicks" to carry on another year. Popular for use in difficult areas. Each packet contains a mix of winter hardy selections with small and large rosettes and a good range of leaf color variations, including variegated cultivars. Uses/Culture: Rock gardens, dry slopes, mass planting, container gardens. Plants require full sun and a well-drained soil. They are both heat and drought tolerant once established and can be used in rocky, average to poor soils where most other plants tend to fail. Drainage is more critical in southern climates than in northern gardens. Germination Requirements: Germination occurs in 3-4 weeks under warm (86F), moist conditions; a 2-4 week period of cold stratification is best for most uniform results. Seeds are very small and require surface sowing.
