Common Name(s): Kale Botanical Name: Brassica oleracea var. acephala Cultivar: Vates Blue Curled Type: Annual/Vegetable Days to Harvest: 55-60 Light Requirements: Full sun Water Requirements: Average Height: 12 to 15 inches Row Spacing: 18 to 24 inches Description: A member of the Brassica family which also includes cabbage, collards and Brussels sprouts. This family has gained widespread attention due to their health-promoting, sulpher-containing phytonutrients which have been shown to both reduce risk of a number of cancers as well as to provide significant cardiovascular benefits. This Siberian heirloom variety has finely curled blue-green leaves. These vigorous plants are ready for harvest in 55-60 days. Vates Blue Curled is one of the most cold resistant, becoming sweeter after first frost. Uses: The highly nutritious leaves provide more nutritional value for fewer calories than almost any other food available. Plants are easy to grow and extremely winter hardy. Leaves can be harvested when young and tender and used fresh in salads or allowed to mature fully for a sweeter flavor. Adds a rustic, earthy flavor to soups, stews and grain dishes. Also excellent sauteed with olive oil and garlic, steamed or in a stir-fry. Plants require full sun, and an average amount of water. A soil richly amended with composted materials and good drainage is necessary for best production. Plants should be spaced approximately 12-18 inches. Germination Requirements: Sow direct as soon as the soil can be worked in spring. Germination occurs in about two weeks.
