Common Name(s): Golden groundsel, big-leaf ligularia, bigleaf goldenray, leopard plant, Botanical Name: Ligularia denata Type: Perennial Hardiness: USDA zones 5 to 8 Light Requirements: Partial to dappled shade Water Requirements: High Bloom Color(s): Golden yellow to orange Bloom Period: Late summer Height: 36 to 48 inches (in bloom) Spacing: 36 inches Features: Attractive foliage, showy blooms Precautions: Does not perform well in dry soils. Seeds per packet: 15-20 Description: The long-stalked leaves of the Leopard Plant make these plants bold specimens that command attention. In spring, kidney shaped leaves up to 20 inches wide and coarsely toothed emerge beet-red and fade to green on top while remaining purple on the undersides. The purple-red veining often persists after leaves change to green. In late summer, plants produce clusters of up to 14 bright golden-yellow flowers on tall reddish-purple stems; some gardeners will remove the flower stalks feeling they detract from the beauty of the foliage. Naturalize well alongside ponds and streams where there is a constant supply of moisture. Uses: Woodland and shade gardens, specimen planting, mixed beds and borders, mass planting, pond or stream margins. Plants require cool, moist conditions in partial shade to dappled shade. Drip irrigation is useful for keeping plants looking their best; plants are prone to wilting if soil becomes too dry, especially in warm climates. Mixes well with Plantain Lily (Hosta), Coral Bells (Heuchera), Astilbe, grasses (such as Northern Sea Oats) and sedges that enjoy afternoon shade. Germination Requirements: Germination occurs in 2-5 weeks under warm, moist conditions, but can be slow and erratic. Sow indoors 6-8 weeks prior to last spring frost date in your area.
