Linden leaf and flowers are produced by the Linden Tree (Tilia cordata and Tilia platyphyllos), more commonly known as a lime tree. The leaves and flowers of lime trees have been used in traditional medicine to soothe nerves and alleviate anxiety. The flowers have been used to relieve upset stomach and promote sleep, as well as to promote sweating (diaphoretic), which helps with fever. The active components of Linden flowers are antioxidant flavonoids, mucilage (fiber, which soothes and reduces inflammation), and astringent tannins. In some limited clinical studies Linden appears to reduce muscle spams in the digestive tact (antispasmodic) and increase diuresis (more urination). Due to the increase in urination, those taking lithium or other drugs which may concentrate in the body due to urintation should clear the use of Linden with their healthcare practitioner.
