Crepe-like petals surround a prominent circle of deep black stamens. Leaves are pinnately lobed and sharply toothed; both leaves and stems are covered in a fine pubescence. Oriental poppies are best used in small groups in mid-border where other foliage plants can help obscure plants as they enter late summer dormancy. Uses/Culture: Sunny beds and borders. Plants perform best in full sun but will tolerate some shade. These extremely hardy plants are best used where summers are cool. Plant in moist, fertile, well-drained soil. Germination Requirements: Germination occurs in 1-3 weeks under warm (68F), moist conditions. Sow direct after danger of frost has passed in spring or indoors to peat pots about four weeks prior to last frost date for earliest blooms. Does not transplant well.
