Ornithogalum Caudatum, Sea Onion, Pregnant Onion, 6 bulbs

DESCRIPTION

  • Ornithogalum caudatum is a novelty plant.  The bulb has a clear green skin and forms new offset bulbs that come out of the side of mature bulbs.  These fall off, form roots, and form new plants.  The are best enjoyed if planted above the soil with just the roots under the surface.  Consequently, they must be protected from freezing, however, if planted below the surface they are hardy to about zone 8.
  • The leaves can grow several feet long and flowers form on stalks 2-3' tall here in northeast Florida, zone 9, from as early as April until the first freeze.  Bulbs can reach about 4" in diameter but our have never exceeded around 2".  There is hardly a more beautiful, exotic looking flower than Sprekelia formossissima, also know as Jacobean /Aztec Lily.
  • Unfortunately it is a shy bloomer unless properly grown but well worth the wait when it does bloom in the late spring to early summer as a single flower on a 12-18" tall stem with thin, strap-like leaves.  They can re-bloom later in the summer.
