The Map Turtle (Graptemys spp.) is a genus of turtles native to the Eastern United States and Southern Canada, It is and aquatic turtle and spends most of its life in ponds, rivers or lakes. The shell is made of scutes (scales), which are a hard bony material and are used to protect the turtle. The top of the map turtles shell has a bony ridge with multiple peaks, that give the map turtle its nickname, "Sawback" turtle. The color of the shell is unique to each turtle. It usually has a light green/grey background with light and dark markings, often resembling a map.
