DESCRIPTION

Common Name(s): Red turtlehead, rose turtlehead, purple turtlehead Botanical Name: Chelone obliqua Type: Perennial Hardiness: Zones 5 to 9 Light Requirements: Full sun to part shade Water Requirements: Average Bloom Colors: Rose-pink Bloom Period: Summer to fall Height: 24 to 36 inches Spacing: 18 to 24 inches Features: Showy blooms, attractive foliage Precautions: None known Seeds per packet: 20-25 Description: The common name of this North American native can be attributed to the flower heads' striking similarity to a turtle's head. Plants produce multiple 4-5 inch terminal flowering spikes with tightly packed rose-colored, 1-2 inch long blooms from mid-summer through fall. Opposite leaves are leathery, coarsely toothed, deep green and 4-7 inches in length providing excellent contrast the blooms and nearby plantings. Turtlehead is an invaluable late season bloomer that reaches peak flowering when many other perennial plantings are turning in the towel. Uses/Culture: Middle of perennial beds and borders, woodland margins, butterfly gardens. Performs best in a moderately moist but well-drained soil rich in leaf mold. Provide some shade during the hottest part of the day when used in the south; will take full sun in the north or with adequate moisture. Germination Requirements: Germination occurs in 1-3 weeks under warm, moist conditions; if germination does not occur in 3-4 weeks, a 2-4 week period of cold stratification is recommended. Packaging: All of our seed varieties are hand packed and shipped in resealable poly bags to ensure the longest possible shelf-life for your seeds. With seed listings sold by weight, seed counts are given as an approximation. Each packet includes a detailed planting instruction card complete with a color photo of the plant or flower. For best germination results, seeds should be stored in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight until planting time.
