Terminal umbels bearing up to twenty star-shaped lavender-pink blooms are held on 2-foot tall stems beginning in early summer. The common name, society garlic, refers to the fragrance emitted by the leaves when crushed. These charming and easy plants are not tolerant of frost but are suitable for use in containers for over-wintering in a frost-free garage or greenhouse and can also be used as an annual in cooler climates. Plants thrive in full sun and hot climates with consistent moisture. Tulbaghia will tolerate wet soils and several inches of standing water making them a good candidate for pond surrounds and bog gardens. Uses/Culture: Excellent for container gardens, pond and stream margins, flood prone areas, edging for sunny beds and borders, meadow gardens, mass planting. Plants perform best in full sun and rich, evenly moist soil, but will tolerate some shade. Germination Requirements: Germination occurs in 1-3 weeks under warm (75-77F), moist conditions. Grow on under slightly cooler temperatures.
