Leaves are held on long petioles that propel them to the water surface making a perfect landing pad for dragonflies and lounging frogs. The radiant flowers are held above the water on thick stalks and produced continuously throughout the season. Blooms are formed of four sepals--green on the outside and white on the more prominent side--and many petals. The sweetly fragrant blooms open in the early morning hours and are closed again by mid-day but invite many pollinators; each bloom lasts about 4 days before the pollinated flower sinks beneath the surface to be replaced by another. Uses: Water gardens, ponds. Plant in full sun and shallow water, 1-2 feet deep; will tolerate some shade but bloom period will not be as prolific. In man-made ponds, use of a submersible netted basket is helpful to assist in anchoring roots. Skill Level: Moderate
