Common Name(s): Yarrow, Sanguiary Botanical Name: Achillea millefolium Cultivar: Summer Pastels Mix Type: Perennial Hardiness: Zones 3 to 8 Light Requirements: Full sun Water Requirements: Low Bloom Color(s): Pink, coral, salmon, rose, creamy-white, lilac and soft yellow Bloom Period: Mid-summer to fall Height: 24 to 30 inches Spacing: 24 inches Features: Showy blooms, attracts butterflies Precautions: None known Seeds per packet: 20 Description: Yarrow is an upright low-maintenance plant with alternate, deeply-divided, feathery, grey-green foliage. The 6-inch wide, flat-topped flower heads are comprised of many individual flowers and form atop tall straight stems in late spring to early summer, blooming for up to 12 weeks. Summer Pastel Mix is an All American Selections winner. Yarrow is a popular choice for long-lasting cut flower arrangements. Uses: Perennial in zones 3-8. Plants prefer full sun and an average, well drained soil. They are reasonably drought tolerant and useful in areas with poor and slightly acidic soils (if well-drained). Plants may grow lanky and 'flop' if soil is too rich. Flowers are excellent for both fresh and dried arrangements but should be cut only after pollen is visible for maximum longevity. Regular removal of flower heads encourages a continual flush of blooms. A good choice for mixed beds and borders as well as wildflower gardens. Flower heads are choice 'landing pads' and nectar providers for many butterfly species and other pollinators making them highly useful in butterfly and wildlife gardens. Germination Requirements: Germination occurs in 1-2 weeks under warm, moist conditions.
