• Butea monosperma, also known as Butea frondosa, is native to India and Southeast Asia and is easily identified by its twisted branches large leaves and exotic profusion of distinctive flowers which appear in late winter/spring.
• A medium-sized deciduous tree, it is slow growing (a few feet per year). This tree is part of spring celebrations in Bengal and is considered sacred in parts of India.
• The tree is used for timber, charcoal, resin, fodder, medicine and dye. The tree gum is also used in leather tanning as well as in cooking.
