DESCRIPTION

Common Name(s): Cape figwort, cape fuchsia Botanical Name: Phygelius x aequalis Cultivar: Yellow Trumpet Type: Perennial Hardiness: USDA zones 7* to 10 Light Requirements: Full sun to light shade Water Requirements: Average Bloom Color(s): Creamy yellow Bloom Period: Mid-summer to fall Height: 24 to 36 inches Spacing: 18 to 24 inches Features: Showy blooms, attracts hummingbirds Precautions: None known Description: The species is a South African native perennial, and unlike the common name suggests, unrelated to the common fuchsia and instead a member of the figwort family which also includes penstemon and foxglove. Yellow Trumpet is a hybrid of the two known Phygelius species (P. capensis x P. aequalis) and features nodding, buttery-yellow blooms with five lobes held on upright stems from July through frost. The long, slender tube-shaped flowers are literally dripping with nectar during the hottest part of the season and such a bounty is sure to attract hordes of hummingbirds. In mild climates, plants produce a woody base with glossy, evergreen lightly serrated ovate leaves and become large and shrub-like in appearance. Used as an annual in cooler climates, they will die back to the ground, but can be used in containers to over-winter indoors. Uses/Culture: Mixed beds and borders, large containers, cutting gardens. Plants perform best in full sun but may appreciate some shade during the hottest part of the day. Moderately moist but well-draining, fertile soil is preferred. *Plants are reliably hardy to US zone 7, but will over winter in zone 6 when used in a protected area or with mild winters. Germination Requirements: Germination occurs in 1-2 weeks under warm (70-75F), moist and humid conditions; sow after temperatures have warmed in spring or anytime up to two months before frost. Can also be started indoors from late winter to early spring for planting out in mid-spring.
