The Renaissance spanned roughly from the 14th-17th Centuries. There was resurgence in art, science, exploration, and literature. The Renaissance wasn't all great advancements, as the great European powers struggled for dominance of the continent and blood was spilled. The use of gunpowder and cannon was improved to the point where they were commonplace on the field, alongside heavy cavalry and foot soldiers. It is typically referred to as the "Age of Pike and Shot" as the pike and musket could be found in most any army formation. First Legion will expand extensively for the Renaissance, and launched the REN figure range with the Battle of Pavia in 1525. It was the conclusive battle of the Italian Wars between France and the Spanish Empire, a battle which solidified Spanish rule of the Italian States for 200 years. REN001-REN030 are amazingly detailed, hand painted military miniatures that depict the German mercenaries, called Landsknechts. Pike squares were also used by the Swiss, and these figures could stand in for them as well. Landsknechts and Swiss pikemen clashed throughout the Italian Wars. This mercenary figure holds his pike at "port" and is dressed in red, so he could easily be part of the Black Band.
