Hello, Here is a true nomad craft who is older than me. This handwoven all natural dye kilim rug, which is about 60 years old, is made by the nomads of Alanya. A region in south Turkey which is the most populated nomadic area in today's Turkey This rug is in a very good conditon and quite large in size. 10.00' x 4.16' ft (305 x 127 cm). There is a nice repeating nomadic and geometric pattern on the rug with varying colors. The whitish sections on the rug is made from cotton. It is widely believed that the art and craft of the hand knotted carpet began with the pastoral nomads of Central Asia. These nomadic people had a ready supply of wool from their sheep. The first carpets were probably simple animal pelts. But, at some early point of human development, weaving was invented. To most people the concept of the rug is synonymous with the Orient, above all Persia and Turkey. There is no doubt that the Middle East from Persia to Turkey became the main region for knotted carpet production from the Middle Ages onward. Not only in Turkish culture but also in other cultures that weave rugs and carpets, the nomads have been the frontiers of rug making. Well simply that was the best option for their daily needs within the available resources they had around. These days it looks as if it is all disappearing. The number of nomads is decreasing as they all want their children to go to school and have choosen a life style which makes them live in one single place. When added the influence of technology on our daily life, the number of new handwoven rugs are decreasing. When you see a large carpet for half of the price of this rug... you know it is made by a machine.. and carries the soul of a machine.
