DESCRIPTION

The setting for this Whistlerian oil sketch is the right bank of Seine looking west to the twin towers of the Palais du Trocadero; a Moorish concert hall constructed for the 1878 World's Fair and replaced by the Palais de Chaillot in 1937. While noting that The Seine was an "impromptu study...not destined for exhibition," the National Gallery praises the work as a "surprisingly modern" and "exceptionally evocative painting" possessing "some of the mood and mystery characteristic of the artist's better-known religious subjects."
