Beautiful canvas print from exquisite Chinese painting authored by Giuseppe Gastiglione, also known as Lang Shining, who was born in the central San Marcellino district of Milan, Italy. He initially learned painting from Carlo Cornara and also painted under the influence of the famous painter Andrea Pozzo. He went to China at the age of 27 and did wall paintings on the journey. Castiglione's early paintings have their influences of Italian Renaissance art with emphasis on color, perspective, and light. During his stay in China, he came to the attention of the then emperor Qianlong (r. 1736-1795) while serving as the court artist and eventually earned his due respect as an accomplished painter from the emperor. Because of his experience in China, he was able to forge a new completely new style that combined elements of traditional Chinese painting and his training in Western art. His paintings often used Chinese painting tools and materials but incorporated western techniques of shading and perspectives.
