Marilyn Monroe was born as Norma Jeane Mortenson on June 1, 1926. During her all-too-brief life, Marilyn Monroe overcame a difficult childhood, including an unknown father and abusive foster homes, to become one of the World's biggest and most enduring sex symbols. While working at a munitions factory in Burbank, California, Marilyn got her first big break. Photographer David Conover, was covering the factory to show women at work and was struck by the beauty and photogenic nature of Norma, using her in many of her shots. This led to a career as a model and numerous magazine covers. In 1946 , she changed her name from Norma to Marilyn Monroe (after her grandma). She also took drama lessons and signed her first contract with Twentieth Century Fox, eventually getting prominent roles in films such as All About Eve, Niagara, Gentleman Prefer Blonds and How to Marry A Millionaire. In 1954, she married baseball star Joe DiMaggio, a friend of over two years. They were later to divorce, but they remained close friends. In her later career, she tried to move beyond the 'blonde bombshell' typecasting and set up her own movie production. She was awarded a Golden Globe award for her role in 'Some Like It Hot.' Tragically, she died from an overdose of barbiturates in 1962 at just 36 years of age.
