Common Name(s): Mediterranean Spurge Botanical Name: Euphorbia characias Type: Herbaceous perennial Hardiness: USDA zones 6 to 10 Light Requirements: Full sun to partial shade Water Requirements: Moderate Bloom Color(s): Yellow Bloom Period: Early spring Height: 36 to 60 inches Spacing: 24 to 36 inches Features: Architectural interest, attractive foliage Precautions: The milky sap released from the stem when broken is poisonous and can cause skin irritation. Description: A stately Mediterranean native that forms dome-shaped mounds up to three feet in diameter. Thick, purplish-green stems have a smooth, woody base and fine pubescent covering at the top. Common to all Euphorbias is a milky latex sap released from the stems if broken. Narrow, blue-green leaves are arranged spirally on stems, sparsley gathered near the bottom and tightly spaced near the top. In early spring, yellowish-green flowers, or more correctly bracts, with purple glands are produced in showy clusters held prominently above the foliage and persisting through early summer. Plants self-seed regularly in ideal conditions and small plants are easily transplanted. These are best used as full sun plants, in too much shade plants will become weak. Uses/Culture: Specimen planting, large beds and borders, accent planting. Plant in full sun to partial shade with moist soil but well-draining soil for best performance. Plants are generally short-lived in the south, but self-seed reliably in good conditions. Germination Requirements: Germination occurs in 1-3 weeks under warm, moist conditions.
