  • Merchants LG Murphy and James J. Dolan operated an economic monopoly in Lincoln County until Englishman John Tunstall arrived to open a store along with business partner Alexander McSween. On Feb 18, 1878, Tunstall was killed by Murphy/Dolan partisans. Thus began the Lincoln County War. Among the combatants was a young drifter named William H. Bonney whom Tunstall hired shortly before he was killed. He would later become known as Billy the Kid. The Lincoln County War ended on July 19, 1878.
