Equisetum is a "living fossil" as it is the only living genus of the entire class Equisetopsida, which for over one hundred million years was much more diverse and dominated the understory of late Paleozoic forests. Great for koi ponds, lake areas, small ponds. Can be grown in tropical areas with regular watering. Easily grown in pots and landscape structures. Cut the tops, put them in water and they will root. Lay pieces down in wet soil and they will root. Not recommended for hard ground freezes in the north. Zones 4-11. Full sun to part shade.
