Although red inside, the Smith Red is a Valencia and not a blood orange. It was first noted in 1988 when Merleen Smith in Moorpark, CA, contacted a local farm advisor on the suspicion that her neighbor was poisoning her tree. The cultivar now bears her name. Fruit matures in late winter and holds into late spring, well past the season for conventional blood oranges.. The fruit size is typically larger than Moro; somewhat variable shape and the rind is usually blushed heavily. flesh deeply pigmented by anthocyanin with very good flavor. Sweeter than Moro with few seeds seeds and holds on the tree past the season for Moro Our One Year-Old Trees are generally 12"-16" tall with a trunk diameter of about 1/4". They are growing in a 4 x 9" container of soil. Within a month of delivery, it is best to repot into a larger container (~8-10" diameter) to give the roots more room to grow.
